The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the option to question specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
